6 Tips to Stay Productive During a Sleepy Afternoon

When the afternoon comes, many of us often find ourselves starting to yawn and perhaps even nod off a little. Lots of work remain on the plate but you are struggling not to fall asleep perhaps after a heavy meal or late night. Fret not, we have 6 tips to help you stay awake and productive through the rest of the work day.


1. Take a Power Nap

If you are feeling sleepy, one of the best ways to deal with it is to take a nap. Ideal napping time is between 15 minutes to 30 minutes. Too short and you may not get enough rest, too long and you end up feeling even more tired and lethargic. So make it a point to go to an empty meeting room or sleep stations if there are any around you to get recharged.


2. Get Up and Walk Around

A good way to get recharged is also to get up and walk around outside. A short 10 minute walk helps you take your eyes off the screen for a while and staring at greens can do wonders for your eyes.


3. Do Some Stretching

If you don’t have time to walk around, at least stand up and do some light stretching. Sitting at desks for long periods of time is extremely bad for your back and neck. You can do some stationary stretches by lifting your hands over your head and bending from side to side. Better still, stand up and stretch out those legs as well.


4. Grab a Power Snack



No, a snack is not going to make you fat if you eat the right thing. Eating high fibre food such as fruits and nuts can be a great way to make you feel satisfied without feeling sleepy. See 5 foods that can help you fight the fatigue.


5. Get a Cold Drink

On a hot day where you are feeling drowsy, a cold drink like an iced tea can give you a boost.


6. Strike Up a Conversation With Your Colleague

Being in office can’t be all work and no fun right? Striking a conversation with you colleague not only helps you to get away from mundane work that is making you sleepy but also helps you to be more sociable at work.


While generally most of the tips require you to step away from work just for a short time, it does help you stay more alert for the rest of the day. By going through some of the tips, hopefully you will be able to make your afternoons more productive.
