Tell us about your business, how long you’ve been doing it, and who your customers are?
Maiko is a new company founded in November 2017, together with my sister. We have been appointed to be the local distributor for Australian beauty brand – CANVAS. CANVAS carries a broad range of beauty products that are made from the highest grade of organically grown ingredients, sourced from around the world. As the local distributor, we are responsible for undertaking all sales, marketing and brand-building activities for CANVAS and its aromatherapy products and skin care series, in Singapore. CANVAS is catered to both women and men aged 20 and above, who enjoy using organic beauty products that are beneficial and effective.
What was your occupation before you started this?
I am a trained Occupational Therapist, and spearhead the stroke rehabilitation team at a local community hospital in Singapore. In addition to occupational therapy, I am also deeply passionate about skincare. At the moment, I am juggling my responsibilities between my day job and CANVAS.
In terms of sales and marketing, how do you reach your customers, and what works?
CANVAS being a new brand on the market, we are at the very initial stages of enhancing brand awareness. Through the newly-launched website (www.canvasbeauty.com.sg), we hope to continue building brand presence in the Singapore market via e-commerce. E-commerce is a great way to reach our target customers as today’s digital generation are highly connected on the go, uses smartphones to make purchases and manage their daily lives. This milestone also demonstrates the brand’s adaptability to an e-commerce channel as the demand for e-commerce space continuously rises at an exponential rate in digital savvy Singapore.
Tell us about your Number 1 business challenge?
I would say our biggest challenge for CANVAS is really showing people we are different. In this day and age, brands that make the most ‘noise’ seem to get a bigger piece of the pie. The reality however is that it may not be best for your skin. We really hope to inspire everyone – both women and men to start their CANVAS journey with us. It is as easy as starting with a sunblock for your everyday use.
Do you believe in work life balance? If yes, do you ensure that your employees and yourself achieve this?
I am indeed a firm believer in work life balance. A balanced mind will in turn channel positive energy, health, and of course beautiful skin! In my opinion, work efficiency is key. If something can be done in 2 hours, there is absolutely no reason why it should take 8 (because of office hours). I always work with a ‘To do list’ and achieve those tasks based on priorities. A simple strategy like this gives me a sense of achievement that work is completed. Once work is done, I engage myself in either a massage, or spend precious moments with my nephew, Callum. I also believe that ‘work will always be there’. Hence, being passionate and believing in what you do is key to great success.
How do you cope with stress?
‘Stress’ is a tricky word. In certain situations, however, it is unavoidable. What I try and remind myself is that stress is a way of learning; it is where personal growth happens. Whether I am in the hospital helping patients improve their well-being or working on CANVAS to educate consumers on the simplicity of natural and organic skincare, I remind myself why I’m doing what I’m doing. When I feel like I need a breath of fresh air, I spend time with my 4-year-old nephew. He is a great reminder to be carefree, and enjoy every step of the journey.
How far ahead do you plan for your business?
Our aim with CANVAS is really to introduce a skincare range that is natural and organic, and gentle on your skin. We also want our customers to know that your skincare regime really does not need to be complicated. It is all about finding the right product and sticking with it religiously. Our long-term goal is for more and more ‘skin gurus’ to discover CANVAS, and for those who are not into their skincare, to start through the simple use of our range of skincare.
Do you have any advice for aspiring women entrepreneurs?
The ‘one word’ I have for aspiring women entrepreneurs is ‘Believe’. Believe in yourself that you can achieve great things, believe in the knowledge that you’re sharing with your customers and really believe in what you’re selling – whether it is a product or a service. If it is something you know will really help other people achieve positive outcomes, you are on the right path to finding success. Lastly, surround yourself with people who believe in your products, as much as you do, and they will inspire you to move forward.
